Glass & Film CompatibilityThe films are all suitable for plain, flat glass interior installation. With the exception of RK20 silver film (available in 60" roll width only), films are not suited to exterior installation. None of the films can be fitted to Stippled, Georgian Wire, Spotswood or similar "textured" glass as the glass surface is not flat and smooth (the film cannot bond properly). The only other consideration is Thermal Stress Fractures (cracking due to increased heat load) - "patio" style sliding glass doors must all be safety glass; generally most are "Toughened" and use of any film is ok, but if they are "Laminated" then certain limitations on light levels and heat absortion apply - the glass is usually marked in one corner with the manufacturers stamp. Laminated glass is the result of 2 (or more) sheets of glass being bonded together (same as the front windscreen in vehicles) - once again the glass is stronger and harder to break, but it is not heat resistant. The inside layer of glass, which has window tint fitted, will absorb more "heat" than the outside layer and will expand at a greater rate. If the window film is too dark, then the result can be "thermal stress fractures" - resulting in cracked or shattered glass. R15G film is generally not suitable for Laminated glass. NS10/18/28, N1050/1035B & NRM PS(2) should be ok on clear Laminated glass upto 6.38mm thick and an area of less than 4.6 sq metres; but not on tinted laminated glass - however, no guarantee is given as to any window not suffering Thermal Stress - there are other factors that effect suitability such as partial shade on a window, warped/uneven frames or even damaged glass (including faulty edges hidden inside the window frame). That said, all films should be suitable for most plain glass situations, just caution should be exercised when installing to laminated glass panes - if in doubt, use lighter films. |
